A mortician has a different type of job. They still care for people and need to have a sympathetic ambiance to them; however, the main element of their job deals with a whole different type of patient: dead ones. The funeral director must be able to communicate effectively with the family in a way that is sympathetic and not offensive. They need to provide information to the family as to how much their services are going to cost, how the family can pay and how much any available insurance is going to cover. They must also plan the funeral services as well as any viewing ceremonies. This can be a very difficult time for the family which is why the mortician must be able to communicate with even the most fragile family member without adding to their upset demeanor.
Education required for a mortician
The required education for a mortician or funeral director is that of a two-year associate degree in funeral services. This program will provide the funeral director with necessary education that will allow them to successfully complete any required state or national certification exams. This program will provide courses that relate to the ethical side of funeral directing including how to deal with the family and how to ensure the final wishes of the deceased are honored. Other courses will include information on how to successfully embalm as well as how to operate a cremation machine. After the program has been successfully completed, the funeral director may also participate in an internship at a funeral home.
